From time to time, I will post stories about men or women who suffered broken bones as children and are now fully grown. Typically, these stories originate when I have only one or two pictures of someone in a cast but know the background of the injury and their subsequent journey through life.
Hannah was 10 when she broke her foot in an ice skating accident. While landing a jump, her foot twisted violently. She fractured her 2nd and 5th metatarsals. She was initially treated with a boot. However, after 10 days in the boot, it was evident that the fractures were not healing and the pain in Hannah's foot was increasing. So the doctors decided to place Hannah in a non walking, waterproof cast.
The day she was placed in the cast, Hannah made a video about the cast. She was in a great deal of pain when the cast was applied. The cast technician repeatedly tried to force Hannah's foot into a 90 degree position. But, all in all, Hannah was happy to have her cast experience.
Four weeks later, the cast was removed and Hannah was once again placed in a boot. Six weeks later, she was boot and pain free.
Hannah blossomed into a beautiful woman over the years. She is currently a sophomore at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Hannah majors in sociology and is a member of a sorority.
As most of you know, I have a bit of a sadistic streak in me. I believe that casts must be earned through some mixture of the pain, horror, disbelief, and shock associated with a broken bone.
Maddi earned her cast in spades!
As a junior in high school, Maddi famously broke her leg in a soccer game. A native of Ohio, Maddi charged for the ball and was kicked in the shin by an opposing player. In the video taken by a friend of her parents, you can hear the bones in Maddi's leg shatter.
Here is the video taken of the accident. The video has earned over 100,000 views on YouTube from sadists like me.
I know from conversations with relatives that Maddi was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Amazingly, her family decided to forgo surgical treatment. Maddi's leg was set and placed in a full leg cast for 8 weeks. She spent another 8 weeks is a variety of walking casts and boots.
I know the broken leg was bad news for Maddi. But here is the bad news for the cast community. There is not one picture I have been able to locate of Maddi in her casts. I have scoured Maddi's social media as well as her relatives and friends. Nada. Not one picture.
Today, Maddi is married and a nurse at a hospital practice in Ohio. And guess what her nursing specialty is -Orthopedics!
